What makes Lines Liberated eyeliner special?
Lines Liberated is a highly pigmented formula, allowing you to sketch out graphic looks as easy as simply defining the eyes. Made with Cactus Fig Oil from the Ourika Community Gardens, it delivers all-day comfort and a striking, graphic look.
Nail your eyeliner basics by choosing the right formula
Eyeliner comes in all textures. YSL Beauty's Lines Liberated offers a waterproof, smudge-proof application that can be as delicate or smoked as you wish. This is thanks to its built-in angle brush, allowing you to blend, smudge and stretch as you go. As bold as a liquid liner and as workable as a traditional pencil, Lines Liberated is suitable for all skin types and can even be used on the waterline.

Step-by-step eyeliner application
1. Always prep your canvas. Gently cleanse and moisturise, making sure any eye cream gets absorbed.
2. Use an eye primer that's neutral to your skintone before you apply your eye shadow.
3. Sharpen your eyeliner – it's much more precise to work with a fine point.
4. Define your lids by tightlining the top lashes. That means gently smudging liner into the roots of your lashes, from below.
5. For a bolder look, gently sketch a thin line over your lashes. Smoke out the color with a brush if desired.
6. To draw out a subtle wing, use your liner and an angled brush to stretch the pigment in the direction of your eye shape.
7. Pro application simply takes practice. Get used to using your Lines Liberated eyeliner to scuplt, smudge, and stretch.
Master your wing
A perfect wing is as personal as makeup can be. Lines Liberated is ultra-pigmented, so no matter what color you test, take your time to slowly sketch and build up your wing. Try either following the direction of your lid, or of your lashes. Alternate between liner strokes and shaping with the angle brush. Clean up any smudged edges with a bright concealer.
Techniques by eye shape
Find out the best way to emphasize your natural features and flatter your eyes, with Lines Liberated.
Almond eyes
Almond shaped eyes can typically take a long or bold wing without looking weighed down. Try sketching different angles of wing until you find the best one to suit you. Tightline and overline on the upper lid, and the inner and outer corners of the lower lid, bringing a lighter and more reflective color to the inner corner.
Round eyes
Round eyes possess a natural charm, and with the right eyeliner, you can beautifully accentuate their shape. The satin and chromatic shades of the Lines Liberated range are perfect for defining round eyes. Keep wings small and thin, and bring light and shine to the center and inner corners of the eyelid.
Hooded or deep-set eyes
To open up the eye, first apply eye shadow to 'move' the crease up a tiny bit to the brow bone, and bring lighter colors onto the bone itself and closer to the lash line. Tightline in a neutral dark color. Make a small wing with your eyes open. Then, closing each eye, finesse the shape of the wing with the pencil and brush until you have a look that's balanced and brings your eyes forward.
Don't be basic: How to avoid common mistakes
Keeping your eyes even doesn't have to lead to a heavy look.
Remember these tips:
- Don't keep adding liner to get perfect symmetry. Try removing some, or use the Lines Liberated angled brush to stretch the shape.
- Don't pack eyeliner into creased or lined areas outside the lid – it could settle or smudge. Keep it to skin where it can glide.
- Don't stick to one color or style. Eyeliner is a product like any other – you can try plenty of finishes for different occasions.
Take the time for finishing touches
Care for your eyes
Before going to bed, always remove your eye makeup. You may need to double or even triple cleanse to properly remove it. Although it looks glamorous to wake up with a smudged and smoky eye, your skin needs to breathe overnight. Eyes are sensitive, and can get dryer as we age. Cleanse and moisturise the skin so it stays hydrated. Your future self will thank you.
